The most common ones: that emotions are unreliable data, that you must have the complete answer before speaking, that your value comes from solving hard technical problems, that asking for help signals incompetence, and that success means optimizing every variable including yourself. These beliefs feel like facts because they've been reinforced for years—in school, in code reviews, in performance conversations. But they're not facts. They're schemas, in the language of schema therapy. Early maladaptive schemas are beliefs formed early and reinforced so consistently that they feel like reality. For engineers, many of these schemas were built during education, when getting it wrong was publicly visible and partial answers weren't acceptable.

How these beliefs constrain decisions and relationships

A belief that emotions are unreliable data shows up as a specific behavior: you dismiss your own discomfort in a situation because you can't explain it logically yet. A project doesn't feel right. A relationship lacks something you can't name. A role doesn't match what you wanted, but you can't quantify why. Rather than treat that signal as real information—which it is—you override it. The belief that you must have the complete answer before speaking creates a specific constraint in communication. You don't speak in meetings until you've thought through all implications. You don't raise concerns early because you're not certain enough. You don't ask questions that might reveal gaps in your thinking. In relationships, this manifests as long silences before you share what's actually bothering you. By the time you do speak, the other person has filled the silence with their own story, and the conversation becomes about defending your delayed response rather than addressing what you originally needed to say. This is cognitive fusion—treating the thought "I don't know enough" as equivalent to "I shouldn't speak." The thought isn't a fact. It's a filter.

Why these schemas feel true even when they constrain you

Engineers are pattern-matching machines. You got rewarded, often heavily, for spotting what was wrong and fixing it. In school, in interviews, in code, precision was valued above exploration. Ambiguity was a bug, not a feature. So when you encounter a situation that requires saying "I'm not sure but here's what I think," or "I feel uncomfortable with this direction," or "I need help," the schema activates and says: this is unprofessional. This will damage how people see you. This is not how capable people operate. The schema feels protective. It has been protective, in narrow contexts. But most of life and work now happens in contexts where that protection is actually a liability.

The difficulty is that these schemas are reinforced every day by how you filter information. You notice evidence that confirms them. Someone in a meeting speaks without complete preparation and you think "that was sloppy." You ask for help and the smallest awkward moment confirms "I should have figured this out myself." This is the mechanism of core beliefs: they shape what you perceive, which reinforces the belief. In the framework of ACT—Acceptance and Commitment Therapy—this is called cognitive fusion: the belief becomes glued to your sense of what's true, rather than one option among several ways of seeing the situation.

What to do when you recognize one

The first step is to notice the belief operating, separate from the situation it's influencing. When you feel hesitation before speaking, before asking for help, before admitting uncertainty, pause. Ask: what belief is active right now? Write it down in a sentence. "I must have the answer before I speak." "My value is what I produce, not who I am." "Needing help means I'm not good enough." Name it like you're watching it from outside yourself. This sounds simple. It's the opposite of simple. It requires treating your own thought as data to examine rather than as truth itself.

The second step is to test it. Not in your head—in reality. If the belief is "I must have the complete answer before I speak," the test is to speak with an incomplete answer and observe what actually happens. Not once, when stakes are low. Repeatedly, deliberately. When you do, you'll find that the consequences the belief predicted don't arrive. People don't dismiss you. Your career doesn't stall. The relationship doesn't rupture. What happens instead is that conversations actually move. People trust you more because you're honest about uncertainty. Problems get solved faster because you shared the problem earlier. The belief loosens because reality contradicts it repeatedly.

Understanding your core beliefs—where they came from, how they show up in your choices, what they're actually costing you—is the foundation for change. That clarity is the start of deciding which beliefs deserve to stay and which ones are past their usefulness.

Yes, but not by thinking differently about them. Beliefs change when reality contradicts them repeatedly. You must act in ways that violate the belief and observe that the predicted consequences don't happen. If the belief is "I shouldn't ask for help," you ask for help deliberately and repeatedly until the evidence that you're still competent becomes undeniable. This is slower than you'd like, but it's the mechanism that actually works.

Then ask: is this belief helping me get what I actually want?
